Eldest Japanese Anime Found

Posted: 08/23/2005 - 06:49 AM, Danny

Japan's eldest anime was recently discovered recently. The Anime was made around 1900, making it around 10 years older then the prior "Oldest Anime." Iconography expert Natsuki Matsumoto and Animation histortian Nobuyuki Tsugata helped determine the anime's age.

The anime was found at a Kyoto home, and later given to Matsumoto, whom determined the specific age of the film after examining productions techiniques and projectors found along the anime.

The images were drawn directly on the celluloid frames in black and red ink. The creators of the film are unknown.

Matsumoto and Tsugata plan to jointly publish details about the film in the bulletin of the Japan Society of Image Arts and Sciences.
