Information about the film has gone from rumor to press release. Most of the news on the film was released during Comic-Con, a convention held in San Diego, with a Transformers movie panel present.
One of the more interesting bits of news were which main Transformers characters will appear in the film. In a press-op early in June for Michale Bay's The Island, Alex Kurtzman told reporters that the movie will feature five Decepticons and five Autobots. Bay continued to include specific Transformers which are Optimus Prime, Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Bumblebee, and Acree.
Staying the topic of Michael Bay, he recently was announced as director of the live action film. Many fans online from around the globe were in uproar as many hated him for previous film works and directing style. However, many spectulate with Steven Spielberg onboard the project the film may have a chance for success.
Spielberg himself candidly declared his passion for the Transformers series in a recent video played at the Comic-Con Transformers Live panel and also on the official Transformers Live website. In the video Spielberg describes his infatuation with the toys and goes so far as to say that he would secretly buy them at toy stores and take them home and play with them. It is somewhat refreshing and disconcerning to see an executive producer so in love with the focus of his picture. Another siginificant point within the message from the Spielberg was his intention to create several Transformers Live films.
The current status of the film is pre-production with a yet completed screenplay. Both Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, both have worked together on The Island and the Alias television series, are writing the film. At Comic-Con earlier this month, a sample test footage of the Transformers CGI, Computer Generated Imagery, was presented to the audience at Comic-Con. To see pre-production test footage from Comic-Con click here(Windows Media Player required). Dreamworks, which recently distributed Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds with Paramount Pictures and Michael Bay's The Island, will distribute the Transformers movie. They recently announced a release date for the movie giving it a July 4th, 2007 premiere.
